The neck is a fairly sensitive area and the second most common issue patients come to see us about. The cervical vertebrae are tightly packed and there are nerves and veins running through and in between the structure. Some people develop issues through their professional life.
Whiplash is the term used to describe neck pain and stiffness following a violent collision; usually a car accident. It can also be accompanied by headaches, dizziness, fatigue, jaw pain (TMJ), numbness and tingling in the upper extremities. Whiplash, if not treated properly soon after the injury, can set the stage for long-term (chronic) neck problems.
“pins and needles,” and even “burning” in nature. In most cases, compression occurs at the spine as the nerve root exits. This can come from a bulging disc or a bony osteoarthritic projection.
Headaches can range from slightly unpleasant to highly uncomfortable and in some cases affect our ability to think straight. As physiotherapists, we are particularly interested in muscular-skeletal imbalances through things like poor posture or structural changes and neurological imbalances caused by nerve impingement or disruption. The latter reduces brain body communication and can cause nerve irritation which can cause pain to radiate out to other areas such as the head.
Migraines are a type of headache that is moderate to severe accompanied by throbbing usually on one side of the head. They’re thought to be the result of abnormal brain activity temporarily affecting nerve signals, chemicals and blood vessels in the brain, according to the NHS. Some things that are known about migraines is that there are usually certain triggers that can lead to the onset of a migraine. Again these triggers are different from person to person such as hormonal, emotional, dietary, etc. It’s important to determine exactly what factors affect a given person’s physiology that might be causing migraines.
Nearly everyone at some point has back pain that interferes with work, routine daily activities, or recreation. Back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the world, second only to headaches.Acute or short-term low back pain generally lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Most acute back pain is mechanical in nature, however, Chronic back pain is measured by duration - pain that persists for more than 3 months is considered chronic. It is often progressive and the cause can be difficult to determine.
Sciatica can be extremely debilitating and make you feel much older than you are. Sciatica is actually caused by irritation the sciatic nerve. This is normally caused by an inflammatory condition from pressure being applied to the nerve through a prolapsed disc, nerve impingement, overly tight muscles, a misaligned vertebrae, rotated or misaligned pelvis, sacro-iliac joint. The sciatic nerve branches out from the lower back all the way into the feet. It is both the thickest and longest nerve in the body. Whilst everyone prefers to pick-out a single culprit there is usually a combination of some sort of structural misalignment in combination with other factors at play.
